Correspondence news found in the Friday April 12, 1878 Crestline Advocate. Jottings from Shelby. Shelby April 9, 1878   The annual meeting of Shelby Engine Co. No. 1 was held on last Wednesday evening at which time the following officers were elected for the ensuing year. J.B. Ward, Foreman, J.H. Letter 1st. Ass’t. Robt. Smiley; 2nd Ass’t H. Shriner, Sec’y; A. Bushey Treas., John S.Trimble; J.R. Wolfe, H. H. Shriner, D. Billow, and J. H. Leiter were elected as delegates to attend the Northwestern Volunteer Firemen’s Convention, to be held in Defiance, April 30th.   M. T. Carnahan, formerly of a resident of Shelby, now of Findlay, spent a few hours pleasantly with old acquaintances here.   Mr. A.J. Abott has returned after a weeks visit in the west.   Mr. Thos. Mickey died on the 4th inst. after a long and painful illness. A post mortem examination disclosed the fact that his liver was cancerous, which weighed 15 ½ ounces. He was buried Saturday in Oakland cemetery.   Ed. Barkdull and Will Curran, of Toledo are visiting in our city.   B. J. Williams and A.J. Mack were elected members of the School Board on the 1st.   Mr. S. M. Rockwell died on the 3rd. after a somewhat protracted illness.   Mrs. Stephen Marvin died last Sabbath at the age of 78 years, and buried the following Wednesday. Daniel Marvin of Watertown N.Y., J.D. Marvin of Cincinnati. Chas. Marvin of Michigan, and Geo. Marvin of Carbondale, Ill. sons of the deceased were present at the burial.   David Funk and wife, of Nevada, formally of Shelby, were visiting friends and relatives here last week.   Mrs. Jacob Sheely, residing about three miles northeast of Shelby, died on the 4th inst. after a brief illness. The funeral took place last Sabbath, and in point of attendance was the largest ever convened at the London Church.   At a congregational meeting on Monday at the Presbyterian church, Rev. J. W. Thomas was unanimously elected pastor of the congregation.   Dr. I. A. Myers was thrown from his horse last week, but escaped serious injury.   Dr. J. W. Lowe removed from here and located at Greenwich, O.   Miss Libbie Lord, daughter of Dr. A. R. Lord , is visiting relations and friends here, their former home.   Mrs. Jennie Criswell is visiting friends in Medina County.   Mr. Thos. Wetz has a telephone, by which he has direct communication from his dwelling to the depot.   Today two frightful runaways occurred. A single horse attached to a buggy ran away which frightened a team loaded with pop. All dashed down Main street. The single horse leaped over the hitching rail in front of Lybarger, Farrer & Co’s store, leaving the buggy on the other side---the horse dashing down Gamble street. The two-horse team ran astride the arch on Main Street bridge, upsetting the wagon and demolishing the bottles. Here the horses became detached, and after running a few rods were secured. The damage was light, the greatest loss being the broken pop bottles and contents. Moral! Never let your horse stand without hitching.   Mr. Wm. Hall buried an infant last Sabbath, about two weeks old.   Capt. C. P. Leiter has secured the position as gauger and store keeper at the new distillery located at Ashley, this State. There were 1,100 applicants for the position, all wounded soldiers of Ohio. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was played here last week, the troupe was greeted with a crowded house. All were delighted who had the good fortune to be present. During the performance and while the inmates were absent, thieves entered the house of Postmaster Kahl, stole his overcoat and vest, and also entered the restaurant of Chas. Welch, where they secured two suits of clothes and $15. Nothing has since been heard from them , though strong suspicion rests on some parties not far distance. Correspondence news found in the Friday May 17, 1878 Crestline Advocate. Jottings from Shelby Shelby, May 13, 1878   Our locality was visited last night with a very heavy frost, and much damage was done to the grape crop and other garden truck.   Mr. Peter Will has purchased a farm three miles west of Shelby, formerly owned by Mr. Bombaugh , and latterly by Thos. Mickey, deceased.   Mrs. U.K. Loose, the assistant cashier of the First National Bank, was on the sick list a few days, but is well again.   Mr. Smith Francis, (Francis Smith??) a former resident of Shelby, but now of Indianapolis, Ind. spent a few days here a short time since.   Miss Phemie McKee, of New Bloomfield, Pa. Spent a few hours in Shelby last week.   Dr. L.P. Holbroom, formerly of this place, but now of Wellington , O., gave us a call a few days ago. He is looking well, and speaks highly of his new locality.   The Fifth Annual Convention of N.W.O.V. Firemen’s Association met in Defiance on April 30th, with 168 delegates present. Tiffin sent 25, Defiance 12, Shelby 10, Van Wert 12, Delphos 10, Oak Harbor 8, Bucyrus 8, Bellvue 8, Fostoria 9, Galion 5, Urbana 8, Napoleon 5, Wauseon, 4, Bryan 8, Bowling Green 5, Nevada 4, Clyde 7, Hicksville 3, Dorwalk 2, Crestline 1. The next Convention will be held in Mansfield the last Tuesday in April 1879. The Tournament of the Association will be held in Delphos during the Summer, the time not fixed. The officers of the Association are J. H. Foster, of Van Wert, President; Vice president , W.H. Kisinger, of Tiffin; Secretary H.H. Shriver of Shelby, Treasurer, D. White of Kenton.   Mr. H. J. Bryer has purchased a new handsome hearse.   Our city is making preparations to appropriately observe Decoration Day.   Mr. Jos. A. Seltzer has gone to Lebanon, Pa., having been called there to attend the funeral of his sister.   A little child of E.S.Close fell from a lounge and broke its arm.   Our Old friend, Mr. Ed Roberts, is here on a visit to his parents.   The Mendelsshon Quintet Club of Boston, Mass., done Shelby a fine style last Sunday night. A full house greeted them.   Mr. H. H. Shriver has been suffering much pain from the effects of accidentally getting some ammonia in his eye.   Billy Garrett had three of his fingers sawed off with a circular saw last week. Dr. Huss dressed the injured hand and he is now doing well.   Mr. S. H. Evans has purchased a lot in the burnt district, and proposes putting up a two story business house at once.   A pine tree in Mr. Jacob Roger’s yard was struck by lightening and demolished.   There were several drunks and rows in town last week, in which T. Jeff Mickey took a prominent part. He was brought before Mayor Hildebrant and fined $10.   Our old friend D. Hawn is again able to attend business after a protracted illness.   The Annual Convention of the Richland county S.S Union, will be held in the M.E. church, Lafayette, the 24th and 25th inst.   Prof. Lowe delivered a lecture before the Murphy Club last Sabbath evening --- Subject-- "The Demands of the day in the Pulpit and Pew."   Mr. Shep Norman Morton was kicked by a horse last week.
