Note all the lots that have been created west of Broadway between

Main Street and Smiley Avenue. Many of these lots were just that,

empty lots waiting to be purchased by all of the new citizens

that were expected to arrive soon.

 

Shelby's newly created and growing businesses and factories

were causing a demand for labor that would also require more

housing services.

 

The lots along East Main Street beyond Third Street were largely

vacant. There were only a few houses along what is labeled

"Clark's Addition". The "Grand Boulevard" had just "opened"

and had been within the year, a large open field. At this

point, no more than two houses were being built on all

those empty, available lots.
